Amazon backs proposed 960-megawatt advanced nuclear project at former Indiana coal site

Amazon, American Electric Power and X-energy are evaluating a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear facility at the former Breed Generating Station site in Sullivan County, Indiana. The proposal calls for 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors, with power intended for the regional grid and Amazon data centers.

Amazon would fund project development and become the plant’s first power customer if the facility is built. AEP would operate the plant, while X-energy would supply its 80-megawatt, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, which use helium coolant and TRISO fuel.

The project is part of Amazon and X-energy’s broader plan to develop more than 5 gigawatts of U.S.

The Indiana proposal would redevelop a demolished coal plant site and could create more than 1,000 construction jobs and over 100 permanent positions. The companies have not announced a final investment decision or construction date, and the reactors still require regulatory approval and successful deployment of the technology at earlier projects.

The partnership comes as technology companies seek round-the-clock, carbon-free electricity for expanding data-center and artificial-intelligence operations. X-energy has yet to begin construction of its first Xe-100 plant in Texas, leaving the Indiana project dependent on licensing, financing and the company’s ability to deliver its initial reactors.
