Amazon is funding development work for a proposed 960-megawatt nuclear facility at the former Breed Generating Station in Sullivan County, Indiana. American Electric Power, Amazon and X-energy are evaluating whether the site can host 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors, each designed to produce 80 megawatts.
Amazon would be the project’s first power customer if construction goes ahead, purchasing electricity through a long-term contract intended to cover the facility’s costs and operations. The planned plant would also supply the regional grid. The companies have not announced a construction schedule, and the project remains in the development and feasibility stage.
AEP said the project is designed to limit financial risk for existing customers, with Amazon providing development funding and committing to buy the electricity. Mike Braun said the proposal could strengthen the state’s grid, create jobs in Sullivan County and support Indiana’s position in advanced nuclear energy.
The proposed site is a retired coal-plant location in a county participating in Indiana’s Advanced Nuclear Ready Communities Program. If completed, the facility could create more than 1,000 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent positions. The companies are also examining whether the project can proceed to a final investment decision, with independent coverage reporting a target of late 2029 for that decision.
The Indiana proposal is the second project in Amazon and X-energy’s broader effort to develop more than 5 gigawatts of new U.S. X-energy’s Xe-100 design is still undergoing development and federal licensing, and no units for the Indiana project are under construction.
