Google introduces Gemini agent for autonomous work across office apps

Google has introduced Gemini, an AI agent designed to handle workplace assignments and operate across both Google services and outside business applications. The company presented the system Thursday at its annual Gemini at Work event, where Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian outlined its capabilities.

Gemini can write and run code, create images and other media, and connect with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Sheets, along with Slack and Microsoft 365. Google said workers can delegate tasks and receive completed work, with the agent serving as a personal assistant, team member, project manager or role-specific analyst.

The cloud-based system can also create temporary, task-specific sub-agents to work together on assignments over several days. Google said Gemini builds memory and skills from the tasks it receives and the questions users ask, allowing it to retain workflow context instead of requiring users to repeatedly explain prior instructions.

The launch places Gemini in a growing market for workplace and personal AI assistants. Meta introduced its Muse assistant in September, while OpenAI introduced Dots late last month for users with Pro and Business Premium accounts.
