Harry Styles premiered “What Is Enough, ” an unreleased song written for Liam Payne, during his Madison Square Garden concert on Friday, marking the second anniversary of Payne’s death. Styles introduced the song as something he had written for his friend about two years earlier and performed it with acoustic guitar and restrained accompaniment during the encore.
Before playing it, Styles said he felt fortunate to perform at the New York venue and remembered friends and colleagues who had helped him reach that stage. He singled out Payne as someone he had lost two years earlier and encouraged the audience to look after one another and express their care for friends.
After the new song, he returned to the planned encore with “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture.”
In the song, Styles reflects on loss and what remains after a death, while the arena audience heard the track for the first time. Payne’s death had prompted public tributes from his former bandmates, who described him as a beloved friend and brother and said they would remember the years they shared with him.
