Houthis’ Saudi strikes put Trump under pressure to widen the Yemen war

The Houthis’ expanding attacks on Saudi Arabia have placed President Donald Trump under pressure to decide whether the United States will join Saudi military operations in Yemen. Trump has said he is considering strikes against the Iran-backed group, but no decision has been announced. The Houthis have threatened U.S. Personnel and interests across the Middle East if American forces attack them.

The latest escalation followed repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and economic infrastructure. The Houthis have also threatened further attacks on Saudi aviation and oil facilities, describing them as retaliation for Saudi-backed operations against Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia is a principal backer of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is fighting to end Houthi control.

The Houthis rely heavily on drones and missiles, including weapons capable of reaching targets more than 1,000 miles away. Their attacks exploit Saudi Arabia’s vast geography: vulnerable civilian, military and energy sites are spread across a country about three times the size of Texas, along a Yemen border extending roughly 800 miles. Saudi Arabia has sought additional help as regional officials warn that its stock of missile interceptors is running low.

The group’s battlefield experience has also increased its ability to challenge air defenses through repeated launches and coordinated attacks. Its campaigns have targeted Saudi oil infrastructure and key Red Sea routes, raising risks for energy exports and commercial shipping.
