Oil benchmarks diverge as Russian diesel hopes temper fears over escalating Saudi-Houthi attacks

The market response followed a U.S. President Donald Trump defended the move despite bipartisan criticism that it could weaken sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin said it saw no direct connection between the diesel arrangement and Moscow’s position on peace talks, while U.S. Diesel futures rose about 5%, underscoring uncertainty over how quickly additional supply could reach buyers.

Goldman Sachs estimated that an extra 800,000 metric tons of Russian diesel, equivalent to roughly 6 million barrels, would reduce wholesale diesel prices in the U.S. The bank also reported that Russian refinery outages had risen by 3 million barrels per day from a year earlier. Diesel inventories were 14% below year-earlier levels and visible Chinese stocks were down 11%, while global diesel production had declined for seven consecutive months and seaborne exports had fallen 1. 4 million barrels per day, or 20%, from a year earlier.

Security concerns added a competing source of upward pressure. Airport operations were suspended and later extended, while Saudi-led forces blamed Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The Houthis had launched several attacks on Saudi airports and infrastructure during the preceding week, and Saudi officials opened an investigation into why air defenses failed to stop the barrage. The group also claimed attacks on the airport, while Saudi Arabia and its allies continued military operations in Yemen.

The conflict has raised wider concerns because Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest oil exporter and the Houthis operate near the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb shipping corridor. The Strait of Hormuz, another critical energy route, has also faced attacks and disruption during the broader regional conflict. OPEC+ production increased sharply in September, led by higher Saudi output, but the organization lowered its 2026 oil-demand growth forecast for a sixth consecutive month while raising its forecast for the following year. Those opposing forces left traders balancing possible Russian fuel relief against the risk that further attacks could threaten regional supply flows.
