Ukraine’s mass drone raid ignites St. Petersburg oil sites as peace talks remain uncertain

A Ukrainian drone assault that Russia said involved 1,015 aircraft struck targets across 15 Russian regions, Crimea and the Black Sea on Sunday, setting fires at an oil export terminal and depot in St. The city’s governor, Alexander Beglov, said one person was killed and five were wounded.

Russian retailer Ozon said its logistics center was targeted, while technology company VK confirmed that its data center was also hit.

The assault was accompanied by Russian strikes in Ukraine. Local officials in Zaporizhzhia said a woman was killed and at least two other people were wounded, including a 6-year-old girl. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said energy facilities in four regions were hit overnight, leaving tens of thousands of families without power.

The exchange came as Washington’s position on the war and possible additional sanctions against Moscow remained unsettled. President Donald Trump said he was negotiating peace but argued that signing further sanctions could push Russia away from negotiations. He also criticized Zelenskyy for targeting Russian refineries.

Zelenskyy said lifting sanctions would strengthen Russia’s war effort and that U.S. -Ukraine intelligence sharing had resumed after a period in which it was blocked. He called it a historic mistake for Washington to side with Moscow and later said he discussed the results of an Oct. 9 meeting between U.S. And Ukrainian negotiating teams with presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Zelenskyy also accused Russia of violating an energy ceasefire 76 times and said Moscow was trying to leave Ukrainians without heat and electricity before winter. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Kyiv could resist Russia’s invasion but could not change the war’s course.
