Stellar’s $4B tokenized-asset milestone prompts push to measure real financial use

Stellar has surpassed $4 billion in tokenized real-world assets, including funds and sovereign debt, but the milestone has prompted a proposal to judge tokenization by activity rather than total value. The proposal comes from Denelle Dixon, chief executive of the Stellar Development Foundation, who argues that the size of an on-chain balance does not show whether an asset is being used, earning income for its holder, serving as collateral or moving between participants.

The proposed framework tracks five categories: held, earning, spent, pledged and moved. Holder distribution would show whether access is broad or concentrated among a small number of institutions. The earning measure would examine whether yield reaches accounts that previously could not obtain it. Spent would capture practical payment use, pledged would record whether an asset can serve as collateral and moved would assess transfers, including whether transaction costs make smaller positions viable.

The network says its transfers settle in about five seconds and that investors can hold and transfer fractional fund shares around the clock.

Several developments illustrate the kinds of activity the framework would count.

The proposal also comes as measurement itself faces scrutiny. The suggested next step is for issuers and networks to publish holder distribution, 90-day movement, collateral capacity and actual collateral use, as well as the share of yield reaching newly served holders. The framework remains a proposal, but its central distinction is clear: tokenization creates an on-chain asset, while usefulness depends on what that asset does after issuance.
