Tokenized finance is gaining ground, but its biggest winners remain unsettled

Financial assets including stocks, bonds, credit, commodities and funds are increasingly being represented on blockchains, moving a long-running crypto thesis closer to mainstream markets. A 79-page analysis from Citrini Research argues that blockchains could become useful infrastructure for finance by making assets transferable between applications, usable as collateral and compatible with automated lending and trading systems.

The shift is supported by more mature stablecoins, wallets, exchanges and decentralized-finance protocols. Tokenized products can create revenue through issuance, trading, stablecoin demand, lending and collateral use, but those gains may be divided among infrastructure providers, distributors, banks, wealth platforms and crypto protocols rather than flowing automatically to bitcoin, ether or one dominant network.

Jeff Dorman of Arca said the initial tokenization process could become commoditized, with more durable economics emerging afterward as assets trade, support loans or secure borrowing. Potential beneficiaries in that framework include Securitize, Hyperliquid, Aave and Aerodrome. Zach Pandl of Grayscale identified the networks that host tokenized assets and process transactions as another possible way to gain exposure.

Regulatory developments are giving the market a clearer, though still limited, path. In January, federal securities staff defined tokenized securities as securities represented by crypto assets whose ownership records are maintained partly or fully on crypto networks, while distinguishing issuer-sponsored products from third-party models. In September, the SEC approved a temporary, conditional exemption allowing limited trading of tokenized stocks on designated onchain venues, subject to requirements including transparency, recordkeeping, technology safeguards, symbol limits and volume caps.

Arthur Hayes said the broader opportunity could involve artificial-intelligence agents that automatically rebalance portfolios, move cash, seek loans or adjust collateral. Such systems would require programmable assets and continuously operating markets, capabilities that tokenized finance and blockchain-based lending can support. The market remains extremely early relative to global finance, leaving open the question of which companies, networks and protocols will capture the activity as adoption expands.
