Bitcoin slips under $80,000 as U.S. Reduces Middle East diplomatic footprint over Iran threats

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 on Saturday, reaching its weakest level in more than a month as concern over escalating U.S. -Iran tensions spread through cryptocurrency markets. The token was trading near $79,700, down 2. 2% over 24 hours, while ether, XRP and solana each declined between 3% and 4%. The move came during a broad weekend retreat across digital assets.

The market decline followed U.S. Decisions to reduce staffing at embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The facilities remained open but moved under restricted operations, with only essential personnel retained. Earlier in the week, family members and nonessential employees had been ordered to leave the U.S.

The staffing changes followed an Oct. 23 memo from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Clayton wrote that Iran had increased efforts to target U.S. Personnel and that lethal plots against Americans had reached advanced stages in the Middle East and other countries. The memo did not identify specific targets or describe the nature of the plots, but it said the intelligence had been shared with senior State Department officials.

Officials also linked the drawdown to threats from Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia. Iranian state television reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy again threatened U.S. Military bases if American forces continued helping commercial ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The State Department’s Oct. 23 travel advisory maintained a Level 4 warning for Iran and updated its summary to cite potential armed attacks by the Houthis and Iranian efforts to target U.S.

President Donald Trump said at a Florida rally that the United States might carry out another military operation against Iran, while mediators continued efforts to bring Washington and Tehran back to formal talks. The immediate market reaction reflected the overlap of geopolitical risk and thin weekend liquidity, but the available evidence does not establish that the security developments were the sole cause of bitcoin’s decline. Personnel reductions and warnings of further escalation continue to shape risk sentiment.
