Dogecoin testnet launches as DogeOS aims to expand use cases

DogeOS has launched a public test network for Ethereum-compatible applications using DOGE, aiming to give holders more ways to use their coins beyond payments and price speculation. The network, which launched Wednesday, allows developers to build trading, lending, and stablecoin services using test DOGE. It relies on selected operators, protected hardware, and a Security Council, with a proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade intended to let miners verify proofs in the future. The system currently depends on trusted entities rather than Dogecoin miners, who are not yet involved in validating application proofs.

The testnet is part of DogeOS's effort to build a case for institutional investors, as Dogecoin's demand has waned after weak ETF inflows and the decline of earlier memecoins like Dogechain and Shibarium. DogeOS, founded by the team behind MyDoge, aims to leverage Dogecoin's liquidity, community, and cultural reach to create real-world applications. However, the project faces uncertainty as its mainnet launch date and key upgrade remain unannounced. The proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade, called OP_CHECKZKP, is still in draft form and requires further development before activation.

DogeOS differs from previous memecoins like Dogechain and Shibarium, which struggled to sustain financial applications. While Dogechain and Shibarium's financial services now hold minimal funds, DogeOS seeks to build trust through its security model, which could eventually tie into Dogecoin's miners. The project's success will depend on its ability to attract users and secure the necessary upgrades to its network.
