Ledger unveils $849 Atom device amid expanding hardware-wallet tampering probe

Ledger has unveiled Atom, an $849 connected security device that combines a crypto wallet with everyday applications. The smartphone-style product is expected to ship in summer 2027 and is available for reservation ahead of launch.

Atom separates Android-based apps from Ledger’s sensitive wallet functions. A dedicated Secure Element stores keys and handles approvals, while a hardware-controlled display and touch path isolate sensitive actions from the standard operating environment. Ledger also says an active shield can detect attempts to open, probe or modify the secure zone, including before the device is switched on.

The device is designed to run Ledger Wallet directly, without pairing to another phone or computer. Planned features include physical approval controls for AI agents, encrypted messaging and support for post-quantum cryptography. Atom is data-only, with 4G and 5G connectivity but no cellular voice calls or SMS.

The launch follows Ledger’s confirmation that at least one wallet sold through authorized reseller CryptoBilis contained an unauthorized hardware implant. Ledger has not confirmed the number of affected customers or the total value of losses.

Ledger advised CryptoBilis customers who had not set up their devices not to begin the process, and recommended that users who had already configured them move assets to a new signer with a new recovery seed. CryptoBilis stopped selling its hardware-wallet inventory while the investigation continued.

The response widened after Ledger asked distributors in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Hong Kong to suspend sales and remove products from shelves. MediaMarktSaturn separately removed Ledger products from its stores and online platforms across its countries after a German customer reported a hardware implant; no losses were reported in that case. Ledger said it had no indication that its infrastructure, systems or services were compromised.

Ledger has also changed reseller rules. Authorized sellers must keep devices off display and hand them directly to customers at purchase, while returned devices cannot be resold. The company has not provided a development timeline for Atom’s anti-tampering protections and said they were not created in response to isolated incidents.
