Tether funds Peso’s plan to put USDT payments into Bolivia’s everyday commerce

Tether funds Peso’s plan to put USDT payments into Bolivia’s everyday commerce

Tether has led a pre-seed investment in Peso, a Bolivian fintech building payment links between USDT, merchants and local banking systems. The investment amount was not disclosed, but the funding is intended to help Peso expand across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina.

Peso operates a USDT account that lets users save, spend, invest and send money across borders. Its infrastructure includes merchant point-of-sale acceptance, QR payments and virtual accounts connected to Bolivia’s banking system through QR and automated clearing house transfers. The system is designed to let users move between stablecoins and local fiat through familiar payment channels.

The company has already connected its service to Yango’s food-delivery platform in Bolivia. Customers select Peso when paying for an order, confirm the transaction in the Peso app and return to Yango to complete the purchase.

The investment comes as stablecoin services broaden in Bolivia amid a shortage of physical dollars and elevated inflation. On Oct. 20, lending platform Tala announced that eligible users of the El Dorado wallet would be able to receive and repay loans in USDT through the Tempo blockchain, initially in Bolivia.

Bolivia’s policy environment is also changing. The central bank removed earlier restrictions on cryptocurrency transactions in 2024, and the government announced in November 2025 that it planned to integrate crypto assets and stablecoins into the financial system, including custody and crypto-linked products through banks. In July 2026, officials said they were assessing whether USDT could be recognized for payments, savings and trade alongside the boliviano and the dollar. That framework has not been finalized, and USDT has not become legal tender.
