Ledger is developing Atom, an Android-based device that combines everyday smartphone apps with a protected environment for managing digital assets. The device is scheduled for release in mid-2027 and will support apps including WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok, alongside integration with the OpenClaw AI assistant.
Users will be able to switch between standard smartphone functions and a secure mode for digital-asset approvals. Ledger says Atom will use a protective enclosure around sensitive components, sensors that detect attempts to remove the screen or back cover, and packaging designed to show whether the device was opened. Its tamper-detection system will have a separate battery so it can operate even when the device is switched off.
The design follows a supply-chain breach involving Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis. Attackers reportedly inserted hidden components into some devices before they reached customers, allowing 24-word recovery phrases displayed during setup to be intercepted. The incident primarily affected users in Southeast Asia, and Ledger cited research indicating that no losses had been reported in Europe.
Ledger has said its Atom devices will be manufactured in Vietnam and initially sold only through its own website, rather than third-party sellers. The company does not plan to offer trade-ins for customers affected by the CryptoBilis incident, although it has not ruled out future upgrade promotions. The approach places Ledger in a smartphone category previously explored by Solana, but reverses the starting point by adding phone functions to a hardware wallet.
