Democrats’ capture of both chambers of Congress sent an immediate jolt through financial markets on Wednesday, pushing the dollar to a one-month low while gold and US Treasury bonds gained.
Treasury prices rallied, sending yields lower.
The response in equities was more volatile. Asian markets were mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei down 1. The competing moves showed investors balancing the potential stability of legislative gridlock against concerns that the election could bring tighter technology regulation and a more difficult environment for the administration’s economic program.
Artificial-intelligence infrastructure became a particular focus because Democrats also won governorships in Texas and Georgia, two important locations for data-center development. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, becoming the first Democrat to win the governorship in more than three decades and the state’s first Latina governor.
The Texas result therefore raised questions about the future pace of data-center construction, amid public concerns about electricity demand, water consumption and pollution. Shares of AI infrastructure companies CoreWeave and Nebius weakened initially before recovering some ground. The market reaction reflected concern that new state rules or slower approvals could complicate an industry already facing questions about heavy spending, although the election result alone does not establish that projects will be canceled or delayed.
Nationally, the Democratic gains included at least seven Senate seats in Republican strongholds and more than two dozen House districts. The new alignment gives Democrats power to block parts of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, reject nominees and investigate his administration, but their ability to enact sweeping legislation remains limited by Senate rules and the president’s veto power. Trump’s apparent acceptance of the results reduced the immediate prospect of a prolonged legal fight, while the scale of the defeat created a more constrained political setting for the final two years of his presidency.
