Gold miners’ stronger cash flow faces a test from low valuations and costly reserve replacement

Gold producers are generating stronger profits and holding more cash, but investors are still valuing the sector below its long-term norm. The NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index traded at 5. 7 times expected operating earnings on Sept. 30, roughly 22% below its 20-year average of about 7. 3 times.

Sprott Asset Management research director Kenny Zhu said major producers had emphasized capital discipline, profitability and shareholder distributions. Net debt was at its lowest level in two decades as returns on capital increased, he said, indicating that stronger gold prices had improved balance sheets without producing a broad return to the aggressive spending that followed the 2011 gold boom.

Agnico Eagle Mines had approximately $3. 3 billion in net cash, compared with about $1. 2 billion for Barrick Mining. Their valuations diverged sharply: using BMO’s commodity-price assumptions and Oct. 9 share prices, Agnico traded at 7. 3 times projected 2026 EBITDA, while Barrick traded at 3. 5 times. Those company-level figures use a different method from Sprott’s index measure, but show how unevenly investors value producers within the same industry.

The financial improvement has not removed the sector’s central operating problem: mines eventually need new reserves and replacement production. Gold analyst Ing said Agnico offered stronger growth prospects while Barrick had an attractive asset portfolio, but warned that few miners had consistently replaced reserves. That shortfall could drive mergers, acquisitions and higher development spending, placing pressure on the discipline that has improved shareholder returns.

It also described management teams as more focused on returns on capital, dividends, buybacks and selective capital allocation than during the earlier “growth at any price” period. The same commentary said mining equities remained modestly valued despite their gains and that the VanEck Gold Miners ETF had lost nearly a quarter of its units during 2025 and nearly a third since 2024.

Gold’s investment case still depends partly on official-sector demand.

The tension for producers is therefore between financial strength and the cost of sustaining output. Zhu said a broad return to excessive risk-taking would likely require aggressive mergers and acquisitions, a substantial increase in exploration and significant acquisition premiums, conditions that the available data did not yet show. Whether companies can maintain low leverage and high distributions while replacing depleted deposits will determine how durable the valuation gap proves to be.
