Poundland rescue bid rejected as 12,000 jobs face administration deadline

Poundland rescue bid rejected as 12,000 jobs face administration deadline

Poundland’s future is uncertain after its owner, Gordon Brothers, filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators at the High Court, placing about 12,000 jobs at risk before Christmas. The legal step protects the retailer from creditor action while a solution is sought, with AlixPartners lined up to manage the process. Poundland operates about 600 stores, including Dealz outlets in Ireland.

The immediate dispute centres on whether the chain should be sold intact or broken up. Martin Property Group, a Northern Irish buyer, offered about £7. 5m upfront and a further £7. 5m in deferred payments over two years, while taking on an asset-backed loan worth about £90m. The proposal would repay only half of a £30m shareholder loan, most of which Gordon Brothers assumed when it acquired Poundland from Pepco for a nominal £1 in June 2025. Gordon Brothers rejected the offer, while Pepco was prepared to wait for repayment in the hope of preserving the business.

Poundland founder Steve Smith urged the owner to accept a rescue deal, warning that workers could struggle to find new jobs for years if the chain collapsed.

The dispute has drawn scrutiny in Westminster. Business minister Kate Dearden said officials had met Gordon Brothers, were engaging with the Usdaw shop workers’ union and would meet Poundland managing director Bill Williams. Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds was due to meet the owner to establish the facts, while MPs accused Gordon Brothers of prioritising financial returns over jobs and asked whether insolvency rules adequately protect viable high-street companies.

Gordon Brothers has said it provided £85m in additional financing after acquiring Poundland and argued that the retailer remains vulnerable because of inflation, higher staffing costs and shoplifting. Poundland’s board said a two-month sale process had produced offers covering significant parts of the business but no acceptable offer for the chain as a whole.
