Royal Mail proposes up to 2,500 support-job cuts as letter volumes keep falling

Royal Mail plans to eliminate up to 2,500 jobs in head office and support functions by the end of next year as it restructures to reduce costs and compete in the parcel-delivery market. The proposed reduction is less than 2% of its workforce of more than 131,000 people.

The company expects to achieve the cuts through employees leaving naturally and voluntary redundancies, with no compulsory redundancies planned. Frontline delivery and processing roles, including posties and drivers, are not included in the proposals.

Royal Mail said letter volumes have fallen by more than 70% from their peak while demand for faster, more convenient parcel services has continued to grow. It has briefed the Communication Workers Union and Unite CMA, and formal consultations with both unions are under way.
